Naval connects this to status addiction. “You have to be careful when you get caught up in status games. You end up competing over things that aren’t worth competing over”. Status games create personal suffering. Wealth creation creates abundance. The strategic choice determines your life.
The internet created new leverage mechanisms. “Post-internet you can turn that into a career”. Authenticity now creates asymmetric returns. “I’m always ‘working’ but it looks like work to them but it feels like play to me. And that’s how no one can compete with me on it”. When work becomes authentic desire, competition disappears.
Competition becomes irrelevant when you own the category. This is fundamental physics: every particle occupies unique space. Naval applies this to business: create monopolies through uniqueness, not by fighting. This requires taking accountability for building something entirely your own.
The deepest escape requires internal work. Mimetic competition is evolutionary programming. Most people never question these ancient incentives. Solitude breaks the cycle. When you stop consuming others’ distorted signals, you can hear your authentic voice.
